                     the US has shown. e.g. after wwII we had nukes and a 12 million man army 
                     scattered about the world, we could have conquered much of the world.  
                     and after the first gulf war, we had an essentially invincible force in 
                     the middle of the rich oil countries, and what did we do? we went home 
                     (mostly, still those no-fly patrols ni iraq)
